This First International Congress on “Urban Spaces in the West Mediterranean, 6th – 8th centuries” will be held from 30th September to 3rd October in an outstanding setting: at the Technological Campus of the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) of the former Toledo Arms Factory, only a few metres from the Visigothic site La Vega Baja which is one of the most important archaeological locations because of its extent and content.

The twelve invited speakers will expound their theories and their scientific studies on the gestation and evolution of large cities between the 6th and the 8th centuries in the whole of the Mediterranean basin, including North Africa . The speeches will enlighten us from the point of view of the landscape and the ideological and political development, together with that of the shaping of the cities as places for everyday coexistence and development centres for their surrounding areas.

In this context knowledge of the Visigothic cities will be particularly relevant, above all in the case of the Royal City of Toledo, and will be presented by the scientific directors of the Vega Baja site, Ricardo Izquierdo and Lauro Olmo. Considering that the period included between the 6th and 8th centuries is one of the least studied and least known in Spanish history, the Congress will be of vital importance in order to be able to contrast the urban models of other contemporary cities in France and on both European and African shores in the Mediterranean with the ancient Hispanic Visigothic capital of Toledo . Until the first remains of the Vega Baja site began to emerge, little or nothing was known of the layout of a city in our period after the fall of the Western Roman Empire . The nearest thing to it in Spain if we disregard its dimensions is the archaeological site of Recopolis in the province of Guadalajara ; hence the importance of the Toletum Visigothic remains.

Scientists who have confirmed they will be attending the congress include Bryan W. Perkins from Oxford University; Sauro Gelichi from the University of Venice; Michel Bonifay from CNRS (France); Ahomar Akerraz from the National Moroccan Archaeological Institute; and also from Spain, Sonia Gutierrez from the Universidad de Alicante; Josep Mª Gurt from the Institut Catalá d´Arqueología Classica of Tarragona, and Darío Bernal from the Universidad de Cádiz, among others.

During the congress some thirty Spanish and international archaeologists and historians will have the opportunity to expound their research on the period in as many papers which will be presented at the same time in this scientific and cultural forum.
